The Regency-era period drama Bridgerton has been renewed for a second season on Netflix – and queer fans are already hoping for more gay sex.

The series was renewed for a second season on Thursday (21 January), less than one month after the first season debuted on Netflix.

The drama quickly became a hit when its first season was released on Netflix on 25 December, 2020, providing some much-needed escapism as the world lurched from one crisis to the next.

Bridgerton, set in 1813, centres on Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and her quest to find a husband. As her marriage prospects begin to fade, she and the Duke of Hastings, Simon Bassett (René-Jean Page) embark on a fake courtship in an effort to spark the interest of other suitors.

The series garnered critical acclaim upon its release, with many praising Bridgerton for its Jane Austen-inspired storylines – but many queer viewers were left disappointed by a seeming lack of LGBT+ storylines.

Bridgerton has been accused of queerbaiting

The Shonda Rhimes-produced series was quickly accused of queerbaiting after it highlighted a gay sex scene in its trailer, but failed to deliver much of note.

The initial teaser trailer showed a character walking in on a gay couple having sex, leading fans to think that an LGBT+ storyline would feature prominently in the show.

On the show’s release, it became apparent that the sex scene was from the fifth episode of the series and featured a minor character, promoting fans to ask if it was included in the trailer to queerbait audiences.

Some fans expressed disappointment that the character of Benedict Bridgerton, played by Luke Thomas, ended the season in a straight relationship. Many felt that the show had been dropping hints about the character’s sexuality throughout the season.

As the second season of the show was announced, many queer viewers took to Twitter to voice their disappointment at the lack of gay content in the first – and urged the show to include more LGBT+ storylines in the future.

Others are still making their way through the first season, and are expressing their disappointment at the lack of queer content.

Fans will likely have to wait some time before they find out if Bridgerton season two will feature more queer storylines, as the coronavirus pandemic is likely to hamper production for some time.
