RuPaul’s Drag Race is set to sashay its way to Scandinavia, as Sweden becomes the latest country to have its own version of the hit franchise.

Drag Race Sweden will air on STV in Sweden and WOW Presents Plus in the UK, US and other territories.

Although details of the new spin-off are yet to be confirmed — including who the host and cast might be — RuPaul Charles and Tom Campbell will again be executive producing the show, along with World of Wonder founders Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato.

The series format is a competition which sees one queen eliminated each week after performing in challenges.

Drag Race and the art of drag are worldwide phenomena that continue to attract global viewers, so we are thrilled to introduce a fierce new group of queens with Drag Race Sweden,” explained Barbato and Bailey in a joint statement.

“As our drag family continues to grow, we look forward to watching these new queens sashay onto our screens.”

The original US series of the drag queen competition – judged by host and co-creator RuPaul – is currently on its 14th season.

Launched in 2009, the show has been catapulted to international acclaim in recent years, leading to local versions in countries including Thailand, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Chile, Holland, the Philippines, the UK, Italy, France, and Spain.

Queens have even had the opportunity to compete internationally in the latest spin-off, Drag Race UK vs The World, which finished last month on BBC Three. This show saw contestants competing for the top prize from countries including the US, UK, Canada, Netherlands, Thailand and Netherlands.

The series was won by Northern Irish drag queen Blu Hydrangea, 26, who, upon being crowned, declared: “Oh mummy!! AAAAH! Northern Ireland, I’m taking the crown home, home, home, HOME!

“Who’d have thought it . . . One wee shady boy from Northern Ireland is now Queen Of The World!”
